The post-season for Western Pennsylvania high schools shifted to elimination rounds on Monday, October 26, 2026. For students and families in the region, the focus moved from regular-season consistency to single-elimination stakes across multiple sports. Field hockey, soccer, and volleyball competitions are now underway, while ice hockey and tennis teams prepare for their next critical matches.
The league season began earlier in the year with standard scheduling. By late October, the brackets have narrowed. The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association manage these tournaments to determine regional and state champions for the 2026-2027 season. Current schedules are subject to change, requiring teams to verify final details before travel.
Field hockey semifinals dominate the midweek schedule. In Class 3A, games are set for Thursday. Mt. Lebanon, holding a 10-5 record, hosts North Allegheny, which stands at 10-7-1, at 6 p.m. Later at 7 p.m., Pine-Richland (13-5) faces Hempfield (5-10). Class 2A semifinals occurred on Wednesday. Shady Side Academy (16-0) faced Penn-Trafford (7-5-2) at 6 p.m., while Fox Chapel (10-4-1) hosted Peters Township (8-7) at the same time.
Class A field hockey also completed its semifinals on Wednesday. Ellis School (12-2-1) played Aquinas Academy (2-9-1) at Shady Side Academy at 7:30 p.m. Winchester Thurston (6-4-3) faced Oakland Catholic (2-6-3) at Mt. Lebanon at 6 p.m. These results determine which teams advance to the final stage of the league tournament.
Ice hockey results from Monday showed decisive outcomes in several divisions. Seneca Valley beat Upper St. Clair 4-1 in Class 3A. In Class A, North Catholic defeated Shady Side Academy 7-1, Quaker Valley won 9-3 against Richland, and North Hills beat Meadville 8-2. Wheeling Park won 4-2 against Greensburg Salem, while Avonworth edged Baldwin 4-3. Division 2 action saw Deer Lakes win 10-1 over Carrick.
Soccer playoffs advanced both boys' and girls' teams. Boys' Class 4A quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday. Norwin plays Upper St. Clair, and Mt. Lebanon faces North Allegheny. Upper St. Clair advanced after a penalty kick victory over Central Catholic on Monday. Girls' soccer quarterfinals in Class 4A are set for Wednesday, with Upper St. Clair visiting Mt. Lebanon and Seneca Valley playing at Fox Chapel.
Tennis competition moved to the state level on Tuesday, October 27. Allentown Central Catholic, with a 19-2 record, plays Scranton Prep in the PIAA Class 2A girls' team tournament. The match is at 11 a.m. at the Birchwood Racquet Club in Clarks Summit. Class 3A matches included Lower Merion against Cumberland Valley in Philadelphia and Hollidaysburg facing North Allegheny in Altoona.
Volleyball playoffs continue in full swing. In Class 6A, North Allegheny received a bye in the quarterfinals. Other games include Canon-McMillan at Baldwin and Mt. Lebanon at Pine-Richland on Tuesday. Class 5A first-round games are scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m., following preliminary round wins by North Hills over Montour and Mars over Indiana.
