Cassidy Schutz, a certified learning specialist at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, has publicly described her actions during the school shooting that occurred on October 15. Her intervention, combined with the quick response of a parent, helped stop the attacker and limit the damage to the student body and staff.

The attack took place in a special needs classroom. The gunman killed three students and one teacher. Two others, a student and a teacher, were injured. Schutz was not hurt in the incident, according to police records.

Schutz stated on Friday that the events moved with rapid speed. "It all happened so fast, and I wish with everything in me that we had more time," she said. She expressed deep sadness over the loss of life and her desire to focus on the families affected and her own healing process.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz previously described an unnamed teacher's actions as heroic. He said she threw her cellphone at the gunman and tackled him to try to secure the weapon. A parent at the school, Kaylub Giamanco, then fatally shot the attacker. Krantz noted that the teacher's quick move almost certainly prevented further injuries.

Giamanco was carrying a legally secured .40-caliber pistol when he saw the gunman. He followed the attacker into the school. In an interview with Oregon Public Broadcasting, Giamanco said he was grateful to Schutz, whose name he did not know at the time. He called her a real true hero and said he would like to give her a hug.

The school district had remained silent on the teacher's identity for over a week. Schutz came forward through a statement released by the Bend-La Pine school district. She emphasized that the tragedy is more than a story for those living through it. She requested privacy as she processes the aftermath.

Superintendent Steven Cook expressed gratitude for both Giamanco and Schutz. "I believe your actions saved lives," Cook said. The district is now preparing for the return of students to the building.

Other schools in the district resumed classes the week after the shooting. Silver Rail Elementary remains closed through November 6 for repairs to the areas affected by the attack. The district reported that 86.2 percent of families prefer to return to Silver Rail. Officials plan to reopen for those who feel ready.

Security measures are being strengthened. A police officer was present at each school during the initial reopening. A team of eight school resource officers will continue to rotate between the schools. A community meeting is scheduled for November 5. Officials will take questions about the shooting, safety protocols, and the reopening plan.
