Adam Schwegman stands accused of a series of violent acts in Topeka that left three people injured over the course of several hours on Wednesday, October 28.
Topeka police report that Schwegman stabbed two individuals along S.W. Fillmore before moving further up the same road to break into two separate residences. Four children, including an infant four months old, were inside one of those homes. Officials confirmed that the children were not hurt. A third victim was stabbed on a nearby street. The sequence of events concluded at Ward Meade Park, where Schwegman attacked a 70-year-old woman.
Ron Hubbard, a bystander, said he was with a friend when he noticed Schwegman acting strangely. Hubbard recalled thinking of a television scene where a delivery driver stopped a car thief during a police chase. He and his friend confronted Schwegman after another witness had already seen the suspect near the park.
Hubbard described physically intervening by tripping Schwegman, causing him to fall into the grass. The knife fell from Schwegman's hand. Hubbard kicked the blade to the sidewalk while his friend held Schwegman. Although Schwegman escaped temporarily, police apprehended him shortly thereafter.
Schwegman was booked on 16 charges, including aggravated battery and rape. The rape allegation is linked to the address on S.W. Fillmore where the first two stabbing victims were found. His first appearance in court took place on Thursday, October 29.
The judge set a total bond of $3 million. Hubbard said he wished he and his friend had arrived before the initial injuries occurred but was glad to have stopped the suspect from continuing his spree.
