State Bureau of Investigation agents and local officers searched the Sigma Nu fraternity house on Friday afternoon.
The operation followed hazing allegations that surfaced on Tuesday. University Police received an anonymous report on Oct. 14 detailing hazing and the use of date rape drugs at an unspecified fraternity. The department is conducting an independent criminal investigation into those claims.
Sigma Nu is the oldest fraternity at NC State, founded in 1895. The chapter had 77 members as of spring 2026. The University placed the group on interim suspension under its student code of conduct following the allegations. Eight other fraternities are currently under disciplinary sanctions at the school, mostly for alcohol or event policy violations. In 2025, three alleged instances of hazing were reported on campus.
Officers pulled fraternity members out of the house one by one during the search. The residence is located in Greek Village. Raleigh Police Department, Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services, and other enforcement services assisted University Police. Recent amendments to the federal Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act require additional reporting of hazing incidents.
A white sheet with the words “Relax Pal” hung from a Sigma Nu balcony on Wednesday. The sheet was later removed, but it remains unclear if it related to the investigation. Specific details about the hazing circumstances are not yet available.
The University confirmed it is aware of the situation and is investigating the fraternity. An email statement noted that NC State does not tolerate hazing and that student safety is of the utmost importance.
