A Lakewood police officer was shot and killed on Thursday evening, November 5, during a confrontation with a suspect at a bus stop. Three other officers were also injured in the incident, which took place near the intersection of Colfax and Wadsworth. The suspect, who had been flagged as suspicious earlier in the day, was killed after opening fire on responding police units.

Lakewood Police Department officials stated that they received a report around 6:30 p.m. regarding a suspicious individual. The person of interest was believed to have been involved in a hit and run accident earlier that same day. Officers moved to the area to investigate the report and locate the suspect.

The confrontation escalated when the suspect attempted to board a Regional Transportation District bus. According to a news release, the individual began firing at the officers as they approached. Police returned fire, resulting in the suspect's death. A bystander was also struck during the exchange of gunfire.

All four officers involved in the shootout sustained gunshot wounds. They were transported to local hospitals for treatment, with their conditions initially described as ranging from serious to critical. Early on Friday morning, authorities announced that one officer had died from his injuries. The other three officers were reported to be in stable condition.

Police officials have not yet released the names of the fallen officer, the surviving officers, the bystander, or the suspect. The identities of the victims remain under review as the investigation continues.

The First Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team has taken over the investigation into the shooting. This specialized unit typically handles high-profile or complex incidents involving law enforcement to ensure an independent and thorough review of the events.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the Lakewood Police Department expressed its grief over the loss. The department described the deceased officer as a fallen hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the community. Officials noted that words could not fully express the profound sorrow felt by the department and the residents of Lakewood.

The Regional Transportation District also issued a statement following the incident. The transit agency said it was deeply concerned by the shooting that occurred on one of its buses. The statement emphasized that the safety and well-being of customers, employees, and partners remain their highest priority.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis reacted to the news on social media, describing himself as heartbroken upon learning of the officer's death. The governor joined local leaders in paying tribute to the officer who lost their life while on duty.

The incident has prompted a significant response from local emergency services and transit authorities as they work to support the families of those injured and to coordinate the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shootout.
