Bill Hader provides the voice for the Cat in the Hat in a new animated feature that reframes the classic Dr. Seuss character as a professional entertainer. The film expands on the 1957 original book by treating the Cat's arrival during a rainy day as his official job rather than a random intrusion.
Dr. Seuss first published The Cat in the Hat in 1957. The book remains one of the best-selling children's titles of all time. A live-action version starring Mike Myers released in 2003. The current production returns to the source material for its opening but diverges quickly from the original plot.
Director Alessandro Carloni explained that the creative team used the book as the first three minutes of the film. They then asked where the character would go next. The answer was to follow the Cat and discover that engaging bored children is his career. This structural choice allows the story to move into new worlds filled with danger and energy.
The plot follows the Cat as he enters the new home of a single mother and her two children. The family is transported into another dimension. America Ferrera, who voices a character in the film, noted that the animation style changes depending on the world the characters visit. She described the integration of book elements into the new visual style as a delightful surprise.
Quinta Brunson joined the cast because she appreciated the challenge of a different take on the familiar story. She said it felt good to be part of a new retelling within the Seuss universe. Hader described the film as genuinely funny and moving, noting that it offers honest moments for connection.
The movie includes humor aimed at adults alongside content for children. A Taylor Swift song performed by the USC marching band appears in the film. Hader joked about the potential perks of this inclusion, asking for a nice table by the window at a restaurant because he was a cat in a balloon in a movie with a Swift track.
The film is scheduled for release in the coming months. It marks the latest adaptation of the 1957 book, following the 2003 live-action movie. The production aims to bring the mischievous cat to a new generation while retaining the core premise of a chaotic rainy day.
