Vic Mensa balances a career as a rapper, actor, podcast host, and activist. His recent work includes the streaming release of his debut mixtape Innanetape in September. He also appeared in the television series The Chi and Bel-Air.
Mensa credits the Voice Memos application on his phone for maintaining his productivity. He describes the tool as the starting point for all his creative output. The app allows him to capture fleeting thoughts before they vanish.
"Everything starts there for me," Mensa said. He uses the feature to record songs, essay concepts, and observations about his orange tree. He also saves voice notes recorded during late hours. The app preserves small moments, such as things his son says, that he wants to keep.
Mensa views the Voice Memos app as one of the few honest parts of his phone. He noted that the device offers many distractions within a single rectangle. Pressing the record button serves as his primary method for retaining ideas.
The artist primarily uses Instagram to connect with his audience. He began the platform by peeling an orange and speaking about topics like politics, history, and fatherhood. That engagement helped validate the concept for his podcast, The Vic Mensa Show.
Mensa is currently focused on his upcoming album. He stated that this project marks the first time he has fully embraced his role as a producer. He is developing the surrounding art, videos, design, and clothing for the release.
To maintain focus, Mensa practices Shambhavi Mahamudra meditation or the Wim Hof breathing method. He often performs the breathing exercise in a steam room before meditating. He advises spending money on items that last or create memories, such as a good mattress or quality headphones.
Mensa described the potential tagline for a film about his life as "Live from the contradiction." He is currently working on the visual and auditory elements of his new music project.
