Miami sits at No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday. The Hurricanes are one of three undefeated teams in the sport and hold the top spot in the projected bracket. They are followed by No. 2 Georgia and No. 3 Utah, who are also unbeaten. No. 4 Indiana completes the top tier, giving these four programs first round byes in the tournament structure.
The selection committee moved several SEC teams higher than their standing in the AP Top 25 poll. Alabama jumped to No. 5, a position several spots above its AP rank. Kentucky rose to No. 6 and Texas climbed to No. 7. These three programs, along with the top seed, place four SEC teams in the top seven. By comparison, only one SEC team appeared in the top seven of the AP poll.
The bottom of the 12 team field remains tight. Notre Dame projects as the No. 11 seed, while Ohio State falls out at No. 12. Boise State, ranked No. 25, secures the final spot as the top Group of Six champion. This displacement squeezes the Buckeyes from the bracket. The hosting sites for first round games would be Alabama, Kentucky, Texas, and No. 8 UCLA.
Notre Dame faces a difficult schedule heading into Saturday. The Fighting Irish already carry a loss to BYU. They now play No. 1 Miami, a matchup that could decide their postseason fate. A loss would likely end their chances, especially since their remaining quality opponents, SMU and Wisconsin, both dropped games last weekend. Last season, Notre Dame was the first team excluded from the playoff after finishing 10 and 2.
The SEC dominates the middle of the rankings. Five teams from the conference project into the 12 team field. Tennessee sits at No. 13 and LSU at No. 14, placing both just outside the current cutoff. The conference has a strong position to add more teams as the regular season winds down.
The 12 team format remains in place for the current season, though expansion talks continue. A 24 team projection from Yahoo Sports showed the SEC placing nine teams in an expanded field. That number would represent more than half of the conference membership. Miami currently controls its own destiny as the top ranked team, with Georgia and Utah holding firm as the other unbeaten programs.
