New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson is in the concussion protocol as the NFL trade deadline approaches on November 10. Head coach Aaron Glenn informed reporters on Wednesday that the 26-year-old star is undergoing the necessary medical steps. Wilson is the leading target for the offense this season, with 63 targets, 43 receptions, 527 receiving yards, and three touchdowns.
The move places a premium asset in limbo one week before teams can finalize transactions. Wilson is set to begin a four-year, $130 million contract extension next season. That financial commitment makes a trade less common for a rebuilding team that has relied on him as a primary face of the franchise.
Frustration with the team's 2-6 record has been visible to fans and cameras. During Week 7, the Jets lost to the Miami Dolphins, a team that had been winless prior to the matchup. Video from CBS captured Wilson speaking with quarterback Geno Smith and passing game coordinator Seth Ryan on the sideline. The interaction appeared heated, suggesting internal tension over the team's performance.
Wilson described the exchange as a constructive conversation focused on aggression. Speaking to ESPN, he clarified that the discussion was not a direct argument between him and Smith. "We were just disappointed with how we were playing up to that point and wanted to be a little more aggressive. That's what that was," Wilson said.
The receiver expressed a desire to secure the ball and change the team's trajectory. Wilson stated he wants the football to "make an impact" and help the Jets win games they believe they should control. "We're not," he admitted regarding their current standing. He emphasized the need for the offense to be more aggressive and avoid situations that lead to losses.
With six days remaining until the trade deadline, the Jets face a complex decision. Wilson's health status and the start of his new contract timeline create specific variables for any potential buyers. The team must balance the cost of keeping a high-performing player against the strategic value of moving him for future assets.
