1,027. That is the number of receiving yards Malachi Toney has accumulated this season, a total that has placed him at the top of the Miami offense. The Hurricanes star is undergoing surgery for a high ankle sprain and is expected to miss the upcoming Saturday contest against Notre Dame.
Pete Thamel reported that the procedure will likely keep Toney out for several additional weeks. His potential return is now projected for the postseason. Miami acknowledged the injury in a statement on Wednesday but did not provide specific details on the extent of the damage. The Fighting Irish, ranked 11th, are now preparing a game plan that accounts for the absence of their opponent’s most dynamic playmaker.
Coach Marcus Freeman learned of the injury after practice on Wednesday. Some members of his staff were informed earlier in the day. Freeman said the coaching staff began preparing for this scenario on Sunday. He emphasized that the team must be ready for Toney to play, but also needs a distinct strategy if he is unable to suit up.
Toney recorded six receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown in his collegiate debut against Notre Dame last season. That game ended in a 27-24 home victory for Miami. He currently leads the top ranked Hurricanes in offensive categories with 73 receptions and 13 receiving touchdowns. Cooper Barkate is the next option on the depth chart. The transfer from Duke has 28 receptions for 372 yards and four touchdowns.
Freeman stated that no single player will simply replace Toney. He noted that Miami possesses talented running backs, good tight ends, and young wide receivers who can step up. The Irish coach explained that the focus is on deploying the right player in the right role. Notre Dame must adjust to whatever plan Miami executes on Saturday.
Notre Dame is also dealing with injuries on the defensive side. Linebacker Drayk Bowen is out with an ankle injury. Safety Brauntae Johnson is dealing with a foot injury, and cornerback DJ McKinney has an ankle issue. Both players are sidelined. Defensive linemen Francis Brewu and Jason Onye are listed as questionable. Both are dealing with knee injuries, and their availability remains uncertain as the team finalizes its roster.
