LSU basketball coach Will Wade has assembled the top recruiting class in the country after securing a commitment from five-star center Xavier Young on Saturday. Young, originally a member of the class of 2028, will reclassify into the 2027 class to join the Tigers. This move places LSU ahead of every other program in national rankings.

Young chose LSU over a final group of five schools, which included Tennessee, Maryland, Michigan, and TCU. He visited all finalists except TCU in recent weeks. Young credited Wade for his decision, noting the coach reviewed his game tape and expressed confidence that he could become an NBA player. He also highlighted the energy from fans during an LA Tech game, where they greeted Wade with high-fives and excitement.

The 6-foot-9 center turned 16 in March 2026. Because of his age, Young will need to spend at least two years in college before becoming eligible for the NBA draft. He stated he trusts Wade's two-year plan to prepare him for the professional league.

Young brings elite international and circuit experience to the program. He helped the U.S. under-17 team win a gold medal at the FIBA World Cup in Istanbul this summer, averaging 7.6 points and 3.7 rebounds. In the spring and summer, he played for Texas Impact on the UAA circuit, posting 10.4 points and 7.8 rebounds while shooting 61 percent from the field over 18 games.

Analysts describe Young as an efficient low-post presence who establishes deep position and maintains contact with defenders. He is developing a face-up game from the free throw line and possesses strong hand security for rebounding in tight spaces. His footwork requires continued repetition, but his finishing power and agility are notable for his age.

Young is the third five-star recruit and fourth top-25 player in LSU's 2027 class. He joins guards Reese Alston and King Gibson, as well as forward Ahmad Hudson. Alston, the son of former NBA player Rafer Alston, committed to LSU on Thursday. Gibson signed earlier this month, and Hudson, the No. 1 tight end prospect in the country, has been committed since the spring.

Young expressed excitement about playing alongside his new teammates. He described Alston and Gibson as two of the best guards in the country and looked forward to joining them on the court.
