Former NFL star Antonio Brown has avoided incarceration following a guilty plea to a reduced charge in connection with a shooting incident in Miami. On Friday, the 38-year-old wide receiver admitted to aggravated assault with a firearm as part of a legal agreement that secures his release without a prison sentence. The deal replaces the more severe attempted murder charge that had previously been filed against him.
Under the terms of the plea bargain, Brown is required to serve three years of probation. The agreement also mandates that he undergo a psychological evaluation. Additionally, he must participate in weekly counseling sessions if such a requirement is formally mandated by the court. This resolution marks the end of a legal battle that had kept the former athlete in the public spotlight for nearly a year.
Defense attorney Mark Eiglarsh expressed strong satisfaction with the outcome, describing the plea deal as an offer his client could not refuse. Eiglarsh noted that Brown had faced the prospect of up to 30 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum of 20 years, if convicted on the original charges. The attorney stated that Brown is extremely grateful that the attempted murder charge was dropped and that the matter is now behind them. Eiglarsh emphasized that the opportunity for probation was too favorable to decline, adding that both he and his client are excited about the resolution.
The incident in question took place on May 16, 2025, during a celebrity boxing match in Miami. According to authorities, Brown grabbed a handgun from a security guard and fired it at a man with whom he had previously engaged in a physical altercation. The victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, told police that one of the bullets grazed his neck. Nantambu had previously stated that he did not want Brown to be prosecuted and preferred that the case be closed.
Speaking outside the courthouse on Thursday, Brown offered a brief comment on the verdict, saying simply that he thanks God. The legal outcome provides a definitive end to the criminal proceedings stemming from the dispute at the sporting event. Brown, who has had a turbulent career marked by both athletic success and off-field controversies, will now move forward with the conditions set by his probation.
Brown’s time in the NFL concluded with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2021 season. His final appearance in the league occurred on January 3, 2022, in a game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. During that match, Tampa Bay coach Bruce Arians instructed Brown to enter the game. However, the wide receiver refused the order, leading to a memorable and chaotic exit from the field.
In what became a famous moment in recent NFL history, Brown removed his jersey, shoulder pads, undershirt, and gloves before leaving the field bare-chested. He flashed a peace sign to the crowd during his departure, encapsulating the dramatic nature of his final regular season game. This incident remains one of the most widely discussed moments from his career, often cited alongside his recent legal issues.
