Dating advice columnists and relationship experts have identified eight specific conditions in a partner's home that may signal deeper habits or history. These indicators range from hygiene standards to personal belongings that suggest other residents. The goal is not to judge a person by their cleanliness, but to observe how they maintain their living space.

Vice writer Ashley Fike noted in an article published on Oct. 26 that kitchen maintenance is a key area of focus. Fike observed that an empty fridge containing only hot sauce and energy drinks is common among people who rely on takeout. However, she pointed out that a sink full of crusty dishes raises questions about how long the items have been sitting and when the owner last washed a plate. Fike argued that the issue is not whether a person cooks, but whether they keep the space functional.

Experts also highlight the condition of the bedroom. A mattress sitting directly on the floor may indicate a recent move, but if a 35-year-old with a furnished apartment has no bed frame, it may reflect on priorities. Similarly, unwashed bedding, stained pillows, or missing pillowcases can signal poor hygiene. Bathroom cleanliness is another major factor. Visible hair trimmings, a dirty ring around the tub, or dried toothpaste residue around the sink suggest a lack of basic daily maintenance.

Decorative choices and structural damage offer additional clues. Portraits of previous romantic partners, such as an ex-wife displayed over a fireplace, may indicate unresolved feelings or a cluttered personal history. An anonymous respondent told BuzzFeed in a 2024 interview about seeing a portrait of an ex-wife who was pregnant with another man's child during a first date. Physical damage to walls or doors, such as fist-sized dents, can point to issues with anger management or impulse control.

Unexplained personal items also warrant attention. Multiple women's toiletries, clothing, or intimate items suggest another person may still be using the space. Finally, the absence of basic cookware or glassware, such as pots, pans, or plates, may indicate a lifestyle that relies entirely on external services or a lack of preparedness for everyday needs.

These eight signs are: a mattress on the floor, a filthy bathroom, unwashed bedding, an empty fridge with a dirty sink, portraits of ex-partners, holes in walls or doors, belongings of another woman, and missing basic kitchenware. Experts advise observing these patterns rather than seeking perfection. A messy home does not define a partner, but consistent neglect or specific items can reveal habits, priorities, and levels of responsibility.
