One member of the Wake County Public School System board voted against extending the tenure of Superintendent Robert Taylor, who will now serve through June 30, 2030.
The board approved the one-year contract extension by a 7-1 margin on Wednesday night. Board Member Toshiba Rice cast the dissenting vote. Board Member Chris Heagarty was absent from the session.
State law limits superintendent contract extensions to a maximum of four years. The board typically grants these extensions each fall following a performance evaluation. Board Chairman Tyler Swanson stated that state personnel record protections prevented the board from discussing the specifics of Taylor's evaluation during the meeting.
Board Vice Chairman Sam Hershey supported the move. "This extension is well-earned," Hershey said. "The results of the last few years speak for themselves." Hershey added that the district still has substantial goals to reach.
Taylor assumed the role in 2023 following the retirement of Catty Moore. He currently earns more than $330,000 annually.
After the meeting, Rice told WRAL News she did not want to explain her vote. Earlier in the session, she said she appreciated "the work the superintendent has done" and acknowledged that "there is much more great work to be done."
