Michael Pittman Jr. has missed five games this season, a figure that stands in sharp contrast to the $59 million three-year contract he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in March. The 29-year-old wide receiver, acquired from the Indianapolis Colts to pair with DK Metcalf, has recorded only seven receptions for 89 yards in the three games he has played.

Pittman is attempting to return from injured reserve after the team's bye week, though he indicated there is no fixed timeline for his comeback. In the locker room on Monday, the receiver wore football cleats, signaling that he began running last week. This physical progression marks a step forward, but he noted that his initial diagnosis of plantar fasciitis has morphed into an unidentified condition affecting his left foot.

The offensive line has operated with reduced depth for nearly a month. In addition to Pittman, the Steelers lost Roman Wilson to a finger injury and Ben Skowronek to a calf issue. Wilson must remain on injured reserve for at least one more game, forcing the offense to rely heavily on tight ends and running backs during the receiving corps' absence.

Pittman acknowledged the pressure of joining a new roster while dealing with the highest number of injuries in his seven-year career. He stated that he is working to prove his value to the team rather than watching from the sideline. The receiver said he wears custom insoles and ruled out surgery, explaining that the issue is not one that can be corrected through an operation.

Offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio reported that Pittman has been participating in all meetings and taking notes on the game plan. Angelichio expressed confidence in the receiver's mental state and his commitment to the rehabilitation process. The coaching staff is focused on bringing Pittman up to speed once he is physically ready, emphasizing his active involvement in the team's strategy despite his limited playing time.

The Steelers will face the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 15. Pittman, who had two 1,000-yard seasons with the Colts, is eligible to return now that he has missed the minimum four games required by injured reserve rules. His recovery focuses on strengthening the foot without overexertion, a process he described as challenging because he has no prior experience with this specific type of foot pain.

The receiver was spotted using a knee scooter in the locker room in mid-October, a visual indicator of the severity of the setback. Despite the lack of a guaranteed return date, Pittman said he hopes to be effective enough to rejoin the rotation after the week off. The team's reliance on the passing game will be tested again when they resume play in two weeks.
