Wyshynski argues that early-season narratives often mislead, yet some trends prove durable.

Connor McDavid leads the league in points with 34 marks in twelve games, a pace that projects him to 204 total points. This figure would surpass Wayne Gretzky's single-season record of 215 points set in 1985-86. McDavid also threatens to become the only player besides Gretzky to reach 200 points in a single campaign. His production relies heavily on line time with Leon Draisaitl, with whom he has shared just 32 minutes away this season. Despite the statistical momentum, McDavid has played 80 or more games in only three of the last five seasons, a durability hurdle that tempers the record chase.

Evan Bouchard skates to a plus-17 rating and holds 21 points in twelve games. His 1.75 points-per-game average leads all NHL defensemen. Bouchard finished fifth and fourth for the Norris Trophy in the two previous seasons. Wyshynski views his offensive output as a strong candidate for the award, though the author notes that voters often require proven defensive consistency over time.

The New Jersey Devils have addressed their long-standing goaltending instability by acquiring Connor Hellebuyck. In the seven seasons prior to this trade, the team ranked no better than 11th in save percentage. Hellebuyck provides a stable last line of defense, allowing the team to rely on its skill players rather than its netminder. General Manager Sunny Mehta previously strengthened the bottom six, a move that complements the goaltending upgrade. Wyshynski deems this change a valid assessment of the team's improved standing.

Jacob Fowler enters the Calder Trophy race with a 6-1-0 record and a .942 save percentage in seven games. He has recorded two shutouts and maintains a 1.54 goals-against average. His performance has challenged incumbent starter Jakub Dobes, who signed a three-year, $16.07 million contract extension in July. Fowler faces competition from rookie goaltenders Dylan Garand, Colten Ellis, and Sergei Murashov. Five of the last seven players who won rookie of the month honors in October finished outside the top three for the Calder award.

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson faces a deadline to sign a contract by December 1 or become ineligible for the remainder of the season. Captain Dylan Larkin, who returned after a trade request, has recorded six points in ten games. Interim General Manager Shawn Horcoff has yet to find satisfactory offers for either player. Edvinsson's situation carries an urgent timeline that Larkin's does not, making a trade for the defenseman more likely before a deal for the captain.

The New York Rangers sit third in the Metro Division despite a season-ending injury to goalie Igor Shesterkin. Rookie Dylan Garand has maintained a playoff position, though the team's five-on-five shot share remains below league average. Adam Fox plays at a Norris Trophy pace, and Alexis Lafreniere has scored nine goals in 14 games. The Rangers hold a tenuous grip on a playoff spot as rivals like the Washington Capitals and New York Islanders gain momentum.
