American voters reversed the political balance on Tuesday, handing Democrats control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This outcome shifts legislative power away from the administration during the first two years of Donald Trump's second term. The result reflects a decisive rejection of the MAGA movement by the electorate.

Polling data indicates that anger over the cost of living drove this electoral shift. Three-quarters of approximately 80,000 voters surveyed by the Associated Press described the economy as poor or not so good. Four out of five respondents reported that inflation caused moderate or severe hardship for their households.

Democrats won seats in conservative states where they had not held Senate positions in decades. These gains included victories in Texas, Kansas, and South Carolina. The results suggest a broad surge that disrupted traditional Republican strongholds across the country.

The decision to launch a war against Iran in February appears to have influenced voter sentiment. The conflict led to a sharp rise in global energy prices. Tehran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, which restricted the movement of oil and liquefied natural gas. This disruption made fuel and food more expensive for many American families.

Rural communities, which have traditionally supported Republicans, showed a distinct swing toward the Democrats. Andrew Gawthorpe, a lecturer on US history and politics at Leiden University, attributed this shift to sensitivity to gasoline prices. He noted that people in these areas rely heavily on cars, making them acutely aware of rising energy costs.

Joseph Ura, chair of the Department of Political Science at Clemson University, called the night a historic victory. He observed that early signs suggested Democrats were winning everything they could reasonably hope for. Ura added that the party performed well in areas that voted for isolationist candidates in 2024, where voters were disappointed in the decision to engage in another foreign war.

Allegations of government corruption and private enrichment also motivated many voters. More than half of the voters polled by the AP listed corruption and the cost of living as primary factors in their decision. These concerns outweighed issues related to immigration enforcement and the war on Iran.

Financial disclosures show that the president made more than $1.4 billion in cryptocurrency business deals. This income included proceeds from his $TRUMP meme coin and World Liberty Financial. The latter is a crypto firm co-founded by the president and his sons. Investors linked to the United Arab Emirates put half a billion dollars into World Liberty Financial days before the inauguration.

Democratic politicians accused the president and his family of amassing billions of dollars through policies that benefit their personal business interests. They cited the UAE investment in World Liberty Financial as an example of influence-buying.

Gawthorpe suggested that voters are more incensed by personal enrichment now than during the first term. He explained that voters may have forgiven past actions when the economy seemed stable. The combination of rising prices and visible wealth creation created a strong connection in the minds of the electorate that fueled this electoral upset.
