A Russian drone hit a train station in Dnipro, central Ukraine, on Thursday morning. Authorities reported that 13 people died and 10 others were injured in the attack. City mayor Borys Filatov confirmed the incident on social media, noting that a passenger electric train was struck while people were on the platform.
Ukrainian Railways stated that a train was present at the station when the drone made impact. Medical teams responded to the scene to provide care to the wounded. Filatov described the event as a tragedy that resulted in numerous casualties.
President Volodymyr Zelensky characterized the strike as horrific. He called for additional sanctions to deter future Russian attacks. Zelensky questioned why Russia continues to target civilians after sanctions were lifted on certain oligarchs and the energy sector.
He specifically referenced recent moves by the United States. President Donald Trump waived sanctions related to Russian fossil fuel sales earlier this month. Trump also announced an agreement to allow Russian diesel exports to enter global energy markets.
Zelensky offered condolences to bereaved families. He asserted that sanctions against Moscow and its war machine must not be eased while the war continues. The strike occurred as Washington reported talks with the Kremlin to lift sanctions on Russia's sovereign wealth fund.
Those sanctions were originally imposed by the Biden administration nearly five years ago following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The ongoing negotiations highlight the tension between diplomatic efforts and the immediate impact of military strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.
