Two people are dead after a shooting incident at the Citibank Center in Brandon, Florida. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced that a suspect and one other person lost their lives during the event. Officials stated that the immediate threat to the public has been resolved.

Citibank acknowledged the situation in a statement issued Tuesday. The company confirmed it is aware of the incident at its Tampa area site and is coordinating with local law enforcement. The Citibank campus consists of four three-story office buildings that house thousands of employees.

Authorities first responded to an active threat at the facility. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office noted that the public was no longer in danger as operations concluded. Residents in the surrounding area received public safety alerts on their mobile devices. These alerts described an active shooter and urged people to shelter in place.

Doug Merritt said he received a call from his son, who worked at the Citibank building. Merritt’s son reported hearing gunshots and fleeing the premises immediately. He stated that his son was in close proximity to the gunfire and left personal belongings behind to escape. Merritt said a poor internet connection delayed his ability to verify his son’s safety for about an hour.

Merritt expressed relief that his son reached safety despite the chaotic conditions. He noted that he was upset during the period of uncertainty. Video footage from local affiliates showed a large police presence at the scene as officers managed the area.

The Brandon location is situated approximately 13 miles east of downtown Tampa. The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
