President Donald Trump spent Wednesday at the White House discussing his ballroom construction project rather than the election results. He stood in the unfinished structure to explain its long-term value to the country. Trump stated the room would serve the nation for many years.
Republicans suffered major losses in the 2026 midterm elections held earlier this week. With votes still being counted, Democrats have secured at least seven Senate seats and 28 House seats. These gains give the opposition party control of both chambers of Congress.
Vice President JD Vance offered a different explanation for the party’s performance. In a lengthy post on X, Vance wrote that the war was the reason for the loss. He referred to the ongoing conflict with Iran, a war he has opposed since it began.
Trump agreed with Vance’s assessment while standing in the ballroom. He noted that the conflict raised gasoline prices in the short term. Trump said he would make the same decision again because he believes it is the only long-term solution. He added that the United States cannot allow Iran to possess a nuclear weapon.
In post-election interviews, Trump said he is willing to accept the results and work with congressional Democrats. He also announced he will use his veto power to block Democratic legislation. Trump said this strategy will force Democrats to negotiate with the White House to find a path forward.
