Voters have shifted control of the U.S. House of Representatives to the Democratic Party. Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, is positioned to become the first Black speaker of the House. He plans to prioritize affordability for average Americans when Democrats take office in January.

Jeffries addressed supporters in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. He told the crowd that the nation is ready for a new direction. He said the party will work to improve access to affordable housing, education, healthcare, and retirement benefits. He noted that Republicans spent more money on campaigns nationwide. He argued that Democrats won despite that financial gap.

The shift in power changes how legislation moves in Washington. President Trump will face a divided government. He can no longer rely on a Republican-led Congress to set his agenda. This new dynamic accelerates his lame duck period. Democrats expect to face vetoes from the President when they try to pass bills on economic issues.

Mike Johnson, the current House Speaker, spoke to supporters in Shreveport, Louisiana. He acknowledged the difficulty of keeping the majority seat. He said the party faced unfavorable odds throughout the cycle. He stated that the group did everything possible to retain control of the lower chamber. He conceded that historical trends likely played out against them.

Jeffries said the election results show voters are tired of political extremism. He promised to hold officials accountable for corruption. He said people in high office must focus on the public rather than their own enrichment. He said the new leadership will move quickly to implement these changes once the session begins.

The new term starts in January. Democrats will take the gavel. They will begin work on their legislative agenda immediately. The focus remains on lowering costs for families across the country. The transition marks the end of the current Republican majority.
