Nearly ten billion dollars. That is the approximate value of Eric Schmidt's personal investment in Anthropic, according to recent reports. The former Google CEO entered the company in 2021 during its Series A round, a time when the startup was valued at just $461 million. His entry point was remarkably low compared to the current landscape, allowing his stake to grow substantially. As of today, Schmidt owns about 1% of the company. Even at the latest private market valuation of $965 billion, his holding represents a massive windfall that predates the expected public listing.

This individual gain is part of a broader trend among the company's earliest supporters. Anthropic is expected to go public this year, potentially at a valuation of up to $2 trillion. Such a listing would significantly increase the wealth of both early-stage and later-stage investors. However, the financial rewards are already substantial even before the IPO. At the current private valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by various venture capital firms and early backers already total billions of dollars. The following details outline the specific holdings and valuations for several key investors, as reported by Bloomberg.

Iconiq, an investment outfit, made a significant late-stage bet on the AI lab last year. At that time, the company was already valued at $183 billion. Iconiq wrote a check for $6 billion to participate in that round. Today, that massive investment is worth $17 billion. With the anticipated IPO, analysts suggest this position has the potential to double in value, further cementing Iconiq's status as a major beneficiary of the company's growth.

Menlo Ventures has been a long-standing supporter of Anthropic, having led the company's Series D funding round. The firm has invested more than $1 billion in the company over time. This cumulative investment now represents a stake worth $14 billion. Menlo's deep involvement in the company's capital structure has positioned it to capture a significant portion of the value created during the company's rapid expansion in the artificial intelligence sector.

Sequoia, a well-known venture capital firm, took a different approach by entering the investment later in the company's history. The firm backed the AI lab for the first time earlier this year, when Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. Sequoia invested $3 billion in that round, which secured it approximately 1% ownership. Despite the higher entry price, the investment has already more than doubled in value. This demonstrates that even later-stage entries can yield substantial returns when the underlying asset continues to grow rapidly.

Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position in Anthropic. The firm initially invested $35 million in the company's 2023 Series C round. Since then, it has funneled an additional $400 million into the business. This combined investment has resulted in a stake that is now worth billions of dollars. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the firm's existing holdings remain intact.

Spark Capital stands out as the only known venture capital firm to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round that Sound Ventures participated in. At that time, the company was valued at $5 billion. The Spark Capital position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold. Its current value is estimated at $7 billion. This exponential growth highlights the dramatic shift in valuation that has occurred in the AI sector over the past few years.

The varying entry points of these investors illustrate the different risk and return profiles associated with investing in high-growth technology companies. Early investors like Schmidt and Spark Capital captured the most dramatic percentage increases, while later entrants like Iconiq and Sequoia deployed larger sums of capital to secure significant absolute returns. All of these positions are expected to appreciate further if the company proceeds with its planned public listing at the top end of its valuation range.

Regardless of when they entered the company, all these backers are positioned to benefit from the anticipated IPO. The move to the public markets will provide liquidity for these large stakes and potentially unlock further value for the company's shareholders. For now, the private market valuations already confirm that the early bets on Anthropic have paid off handsomely. The coming months will determine how much more value these investors can extract from their positions as the company transitions to public ownership.

The story of Anthropic's investor base serves as a case study in the financial dynamics of the current AI boom. It shows how early conviction can translate into extraordinary wealth, and how even later-stage institutional investors can secure billions in gains. As the company prepares for its public debut, the focus will shift to how these large holders manage their stakes in the public market. For now, the numbers speak for themselves, marking a significant milestone in the history of venture capital investments in artificial intelligence.
